KPJ was one of seven companies which was honoured for exemplary corporate responsibility (CR) initiatives at the inaugural StarBiz-ICR Malaysia Corporate Responsibility Awards 2008, held at Nikko Hote


Declared as the winner of Marketplace category for companies with market capitalization below RM1bil, the awards was received by KPJ Group General Manager, Aminudin Dawam, from Raja Muda of Perak Dr Raja Nazrin Shah. The event was jointly organised by Star Publications (M) Bhd and the Institute of Corporate Responsibility Malaysia (ICRM).

With the aim of making healthcare accessible to all, KPJ Healthcare Berhad (KPJ) has invested in many efforts in making sure that the caring hand is extended to help the public. Having recognized as the leading brand in the private healthcare sector in Malaysia and as one of the pioneers in the nation’s private healthcare service industry, KPJ takes CSR initiatives seriously, by integrating it into the firm's core decision making strategy and management processes.

“Our Company’s mission is to deliver quality healthcare services to our customers, hence the connections we have with CR initiatives are inevitable. Our CR initiatives are integrated into the purpose of our business that we do not regard our CR strategies different than that of our overall business strategies. We highlight the importance of making healthcare affordable hence accessible, as part of our business strategy; and with that we have initiated many CR approaches to conform in accordance with those objectives, including the establishment of Klinik Waqaf An-Nur nationwide, where underprivileged patients regardless of their creed, race and religion are accessible to doctor’s treatment and medication at only RM 5.” said KPJ Managing Director, Datin Paduka Siti Sa’diah Sheikh Bakir referring to KPJ’s  Klinik Waqaf An-Nur (KWAN), and Dialysis clinics which is the main community project extensively undertaken together with Johor Corporation (JCorp), its holding company. Currently there are 9 KWAN clinics nationwide, one of which has been upgraded into a 30-bedded Waqaf Hospital in Pasir Gudang, Johor.

Since their inception, KWAN clinics in KOTARAYA, Batu Pahat, Senawang, Sungai Buloh, Masjid Jamek Sultan Ibrahim, Ijok, Masjid Jamek Bandar, and Sarawak have treated nearly 500,000 patients from all races and religions. Currently the KWAN clinics are equipped with 42 dialysis machines, providing consistent life-saving care for 130 kidney patients. KPJ’s direct contribution to KWAN this year is has increased to RM 1.25 million this year.  Other than managing the clinic operations, including provision of the doctors and nurses.

KPJ is also actively involved in a television show, At-Tijarah. The show is linked to Tijarah Ramadan, a show aired during the fasting month of Ramadan. A product of the collaboration between JCorp and Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM), Tijarah Ramadhan was specially designed to help the less privileged in the community. Through the programme, KPJ rendered assistance by sponsoring medical treatment to selected needy patients. In addition to medical support, KPJ contributed to the fund managed by JCorp, to assist patients in need of medical attention. KPJ also organized a number of special medical camps throughout the nation by conducting health talks, extending basic health check-up and treatment, as well as creating health awareness among the residents.  Since 2006, KPJ has adopted Kampung Permas Kelapa in Pontian as commitment to conduct medical camp on a yearly basis for the village and surrounding communities as well.

The Group has also been actively involved in sponsoring students of their own PNC International College of Nursing and Health Sciences (PNC). More than RM 750,000 was allocated for scholarships in 2007 and the amount will be expected to increase to more than RM1mil this year as the anticipated number of sponsored student increases.  As a responsible employer, KPJ is continuously upgrading its employee’s knowledge, skills and competencies by organizing continuous training both internally and externally.

KPJ believes that CR initiatives should focus on getting closer to society and making healthcare affordable to everyone. We want KPJ to be a household name when it comes to healthcare. As a healthcare provider, KPJ does not see any difference between its business and corporate responsibility initiatives asKPJ’s CR activities are integrated into the purpose of the business and are not separated from the overall strategies. KPJ will continue being actively involved in CR and increase the initiatives in strive to become the most preferred healthcare provider in the country.
