Radiotherapy & Oncology Services
What is Radiotheraphy?
Radiotheraphy or radiation treatment is the use of high energy x-rays or electron in the treatment of cancer. A linear accelerator is the equipment that produces radiation. It is a common treatment for cancer, either on its own, or, often in conjunction with surgery or chemotherapy.
How does radiation treatment work?
Cancer cells reproduce faster than normal cells in the body. Radiation therapy targets these rapidly dividing cells. The radiation reacts with water in the cells and this reaction damages the DNA or genetic material I the cell that controls cell growth. Normally, cells can repair themselves and continue growing. But since cancer cells cannot repair themselves as easily, they die. Although normal cells are also affected they repair themselves more effectively.
Radiation therapy has undergone major advances in recent years. The use of computers, highly sophisticated equipment and new understandings of how cancer cells work have made radiation safer than ever.

LASIK Services
What is LASIK?
In general, LASIK is a procedure that allows spectacle wearer with near-sightedness, far-sightedness and/or astigmatism to no longer need to depend on their glasses or contact lenses.
How is LASIK performed?
Here in KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital, instead of a blade, femtosecond LASIK is used to create a thin flap on the cornea. The surgeon then folds the flap back, and the corneal tissue underneath it will be reshaped using excimer laser. The procedure is then completed by placing the flap back in place. LASIK performed by us is 100% bladeless.
It is a painless procedure that does not require you to be admitted to the hospital. During the procedure, you will be given step-by-step instructions by the surgeon, guiding you throughout the whole process. It will take only 10 minutes of operating room time. You will not be needing your glasses anymore, immediately after the procedure is done.
What do I need to do before LASIK surgery is done?
If you are considering to get LASIK done, you will need to come for screening session to determine if you are a suitable candidate. The surgeon and optometrist will perform a thorough eye examination to ensure all criteria are met, to measure the amount of corneal layer needed to be reshaped, and to detect any eye abnormalities that can cause you to not be a suitable LASIK surgery candidate. Once you have cleared all the tests, an appointment will be made for the surgery.
Who is suitable for LASIK?
1. Aged 18 years and above
2. Have stabilized refractive power (not much change in power in 1-2 years)
3. Have common visual problems: farsightedness, nearsightedness (less than -14.00D) and/or astigmatism (less than -6.00D)
4. Healthy cornea
5. Good eye health
6. Good general health
7. Not pregnant or nursing
Nevertheless, the cornea and pupil has to meet certain parameters that can only be finalized by the optometrist and/or surgeon.
