Ovarian Cancer Awareness

Ovarian Cancer Awareness

Valid Date: 31 Dec, 2026

What is Ovarian Cancer?

Ovarian cancer begins in the ovaries, which are part of the female reproductive system. Often referred to as a "silent disease", it can go unnoticed until the later stages.  Although not among the most common cancers, ovarian cancer is one of the most lethal gynaecological cancers due to its late detection.

Key Facts:
Ovarian cancer makes up around 5.6% of all female cancers in Malaysia (Source: Malaysian National Cancer Registry Report 2012–2016).
It is the fifth most common cancer among Malaysian women.
Most cases occur in women over the age of 50.
The most common type is epithelial ovarian cancer, which starts in the tissue lining the ovaries. (Sources: Malaysian National Cancer Registry, Mayo Clinic)

What You Can Do – Prevention and Screening

There is no guaranteed way to prevent ovarian cancer, but certain steps can help reduce your risk.

Prevention Tips:
Using oral contraceptives (linked to lower risk)
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Preventive surgery for high-risk women (ovary and fallopian tube removal)
Regular health checkups
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle

Screening Options:
No standard screening test for low-risk women
High-risk women may consider:
   a) Transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS)
   b) CA-125 blood test

Consult a doctor if you experience persistent symptoms or have a family history of cancer.
